LPK Attorneys Join Mesothelioma Foundation at Today Show to Raise Awareness

mesothelioma awareness day 2012NEW YORK, New York, October 3, 2012 - On Friday, September 28, 2012, attorneys from Levy Phillips & Konigsberg LLP (“LPK”) joined members and activists from the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, aka the Meso Foundation, at the Today Show to raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos and need for a cure to mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Donning bright yellow “Cure Meso” t-shirts and braving downpours, the Meso Foundation and LPK nonetheless made an impressive show of support on the Today Show.

After the Today Show rally, the Meso Foundation’s first-ever “Knowledge is Hope” conference was held at the Harvard Club in New York City. The conference provided a regional source of information on treatment for malignant mesothelioma and allowed those who could not make the Meso Foundation’s annual conference in Washington D.C. to learn about important medical developments the experts in the field offer. Patients, their families, and their doctors came to talk about treatments and therapies available, treatments still in development and clinical trials.

In the morning session, Drs. Lee Krug, Harvey Pass, and Kenneth Rosenzweig discussed the surgical, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy options for plural mesothelioma. Dr. Marc Ladanyi followed with a presentation on the possibilities for medical advancement currently arising from studying the genetics of mesothelioma. After lunch, Drs. Garrett Nash and Robert Taub discussed the application of chemotherapy and surgery to the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma. The Meso Foundation’s own Mary Hesdorffer, NP, talked about the clinical trials available, and Dr. Kathleen Wesa presented options for complimentary therapies.

Dr. Jacqueline Moline started the afternoon session speaking about occupational and 9/11 exposures and cancer risk, a discussion of particular interest for the local New York and New Jersey attendees. Robert Komitor, a partner at LPK, then concluded the conference discussing the legal implications of mesothelioma.

While LPK was proud to support the conference with an educational grant for the Meso Foundation’s important work, the sold-out event also helped to raise more funds toward the most important goal - medical research to find a cure!
