Mesothelioma Compensation Verdict of $19 Million Awarded to Former Brooklyn Navy Yard Electrician and Pfizer Mechanic
Mesothelioma compensation verdict of $19 Million was awarded by a New York jury to former apprentice electrician at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and maintenance mechanic at the Pfizer manufacturing plant in Brooklyn, New York, both represented by mesothelioma lawyers from Levy Phillips & Konigsberg, LLP.
NEW YORK, New York, June 1, 2002 - A New York City jury awarded a $19.5 Million mesothelioma compensation verdict to two LPK clients John Matteson1 and Natalie B. Lustenring, individually and as executrix of the estate of John K. Lustenring2.
Mr. John Matteson, 75 years old, claimed asbestos exposure to asbestos-containing cable manufactured by The Okonite Company and cable tube packing manufactured by John Crane, Inc., while working as an apprentice electrician at the Brooklyn Navy Yard from 1943 through 1944. He was given the mesothelioma diagnosis in 2001. Mr. Matteson was awarded a total of $13 million ($5 million in mesothelioma compensation for his past pain and suffering and $8 million in mesothelioma compensation for future pain and suffering) against The Okonite Company (found 55% responsible) and John Crane Inc. (found 45% responsible).
Mr. John Lustenring, who died at the age of 77 from malignant mesothelioma, was a life long employee at the Pfizer manufacturing plant in Brooklyn, New York. He worked as a maintenance mechanic where he was responsible for maintaining and repairing pumps and other equipment used at the facility. In performing his duties, Mr. Lustenring would be required to regularly work with asbestos-containing gaskets, including those manufactured by John Crane, Inc.
Mr. Lustenring was awarded $5 million in mesothelioma compensation for his past pain and suffering and his spouse was awarded $1.5 million in mesothelioma compensation for her loss of consortium and services. John Crane, Inc., was found 100% responsible for Mr. Lustenring's mesothelioma.
Mr. Matteson and Mr. Lustenring were represented by mesothelioma lawyers Robert I. Komitor and Jerome H. Block, both of the mesothelioma law firm of Levy Phillips & Konigsberg, LLP.

Malignant mesothelioma has no known cure and often causes severe pain, suffering, and other types of damage, such as loss of consortium, and loss of income. Additionally, due to the exceedingly high cost of malignant mesothelioma treatments, many families exhaust savings and accumulate financial debt in order to pay for the medical expenses of their family member.
Under the law of most states, pain and suffering from malignant mesothelioma may be compensated through the award of money damages, usually obtained with the help of experienced mesothelioma attorneys. In some states other types of damages may also be recovered.
Asbestos litigation affords malignant mesothelioma victims the opportunity to receive financial compensation and hold accountable the companies that caused their asbestos exposure.
If you or your family member has been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, you should get in touch with a mesothelioma lawyer as early as possible to determine if you have a mesothelioma case and to:
- Preserve your rights to bring a legal action against the responsible parties within the limited time frame allowed by law, known as statute of limitations;
- Obtain maximum compensation in your case by being able to:
- Preserve evidence and establish facts of the asbestos exposure while the claimant is still alive and able to provide information;
- File and resolve a lawsuit against the responsible parties before they file for bankruptcy or, if they already have, to obtain compensation before their bankruptcy trust funds run out of money;
- Expedite your case, as courts tend to give higher priority to malignant mesothelioma lawsuits where the claimant is still alive.
